SONGS OF TIME AND FORTUNEWelcome to the 2011-2012 season with 3 Rivers Chorale! In January, the chorale offers a unique performance that includes teen poetry, a 17 year old guest composer, and a host of unforgettable “Songs of Time and Fortune”. The theme asks us to look at our own place in the continuum of ages, talents, musical experience, and life experience, and to consider our part in fortune –or lack thereof — personally and globally. The expression of comfort, admonition, counsel, or simple observation on these themes lies within the texts of music dating from today back to early church music of the Middle Ages. To connect with the immediacy of what’s happening right now in today’s world, we are opening a poetry writing contest to 13 -19 year olds in Josephine County. Teen poets will be asked to re-interpret the themes of our songs by writing their own poetry, from their own perspectives, to accompany each work on the program. Winners will read or perform their poetry at our concerts. Phone Kate at 541-592-2981 to learn more about the teen poetry contest., or click on the “Poetry” page on this website. Zach Kay, a senior at Grants Pass High School, who has written many original songs, and has arranged an alt-rock song for string quartet and choir, will perform with us. Other guest musicians will include violinists from local high schools, a cellist and violist from local orchestras, and our principal pianist, Nancy Hodgson. The Chorale offers two concerts, scheduled for January 21 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction and on January 22 at Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass. Both are at 3 pm. Tickets for the Grants Pass concert will be available at Oregon Books. Prices are $10 advance, $12 at the door $5 students. The Cave Junction concert is by donation. |
